Dear Sir/ Madam:

I am very proud that there is a prominent Tamil TV channel in Canada that broadcasts more news and situation reports about our homeland, Tamil Eelam. Thank you for your great service.

Yet, I’m bit dissappointed with TVi that TVi had the “exclusive” right to broadcast Maveerar Naal in Canada. I think this event should not have been a commercial bargain. I think no one should have “exclusive” rights to broadcast this event. All Tamil TV channels should have given free access to this live broadcast.

By acquiring the “exclusive” right to Tamil Eelam’s National Maveerar Naal, other Canadian TV channels were seen as anti-Tamil elements. In turn, people will falsely assume other Canadian Tamil TV channels are supportive of Sri Lankan government’s propaganda, as I have assumed earlier. This is by far not a healthy Tamil media relationships.

I would appreciate if TVi would not acquire “exclusive” rights for any Tamil Eelam’s National events. I have posted this letter in my blog at Disappointed with TVi

Thank you

  1. Well, I don’t think this is a fair comment regarding TVI.
My First point (main point) is TVI is the “only” TV was advertising about the “marrverar nal” event and pulled the people to the event!! The main credit of crowd pulling should goes to TVI and none for TamilOne.
2nd point is, TVI & TTN (Europe) was bringing the live Feed from Back home and This TamilOne was getting the Feed off from TTN air and Re-telecasting it!! Technically it’s a crime! Okay we can say that “its a special event and its should not have rights issue!” i) why TamilOne could not get it by them self? Why did TamilOne stealing it from TVI?? ii) Okay they stole it from tvi! Then why did they stretched the video (to hide the TVI logo) and make Talaivar’s face look ugly! – They don’t care about the quality and the content they simply want to compete!!! Their target is getting views (from tvi!) and they were using the “time – Marveerarnal”
3rd, as a media, the mail target is crowd pulling, even though most of the people went to that event to participate, there are plenty of people came just to see the event, by having the event live on TV, the people who was in two minds and physically tired (that was a working day) would prefer to stay home and watch it. It’s a decision between how much crowds we would loose by having live Vs how much disabled/physically incapable people who can not attend the event. –Live telecasting for this type of the event is just really a bad idea for the real target.
When we look at the bigger picture! TVI did the right thing. – TamilOne will not stay long! Soon they will be in different name! May be singalaone! Who knows!!!!

  2. Dear Shankar,

I did not mention the Canadian TamilOne TV channel. All I said was that having “exclusive” rights on a national event is not a good thing in my opinion.

Having exclusive rights mean that only TVi, nobody but them, can broadcast the event in Canada. Of course, when TamilOne or any other channel couldn’t get the event broadcasted, they either do not broadcast at all or broadcast illegally.

Now, this leads to think all Canadian Tamil TV channels are anti-Tamil elements except TVi. This will lead people to hate other Tamil TV channels, and in turn the other TV channels will broadcast more and more Sri Lankan government’s propaganda, since those type of viewer’s are watching their channels.

  3. Dear CAPitalZ,

I agree that it is not a good idea to give only 1 channel excusive rights for national event like Marvira Naal etc.

But let me tell you. I live here in Europe, and I subscribe to TTN Tamil TV. There are many Tamil channels in Europe (Deepam TV, Sun TV, KTV, Cee(I)TV, DAN TRT Tamil Ozhi – and last year there were even more Tamil TV-channels.

The competition is very big. For example Cee(I)TV and DAN TRT Tamil Ozhi are telecasting free-to-air, and Sun TV offers 2 channels on 1 subcription.
So TTN need this “exclusice rights”, so the channel can get more viewers and survive in the media market. But the LTTE is not unfair, because Marvira Naal is telecasted for free on TTN every year.
The other Tamil channels don’t have the rights for live video telecasting of the speech, but they are allowed to telecast the audioformat of the speech live. For example DAN TRT Tamil Ozhi last year telecasted the speech live on TV, but they had only a picture of our national leader from the previous Mavira Naal on the screen. TamilOne TV could have done the same.

TTN and TVI are using a lot of money to get these live feeds from the satellite, so it is absolutely unfair if others steal the live telecasting feed.

The owners of the other TV station can do the same as DAN TRT Tamil Ozhi did. Just put on the audio feed of the live speech. Problem is solved.

It is not easy to run a TV station… it costs a lot, and to survive in the media, you have to have something special to offer your subscribers 🙂

By the way – how did ATN Tamil Channel handle Marvira Naal?

    Kindly regards

  4. Dear Suriyan,

Thanks for your visit and comment.

I absolutely agree with you from the point of a commercial media channel. If you look at from the National interest, I think it is unfair.

There are other things you can have exclusive rights. Live broadcast of Dr. “theesaththin kural” Anton Balasingham’s cremation, recent fighting, recent speech by a prominent LTTE commanders, “pongu thamizh” event, some documentary of day to day life in Tamil Eelam, even maaveerar naal events from other countries are some of them.

I did not say LTTE being unfair. I know our leader’s speach is broadcasted free. It is the media channels that is putting a value on a priceless speach. Our leader’s speach is extremely important and expected not only by Tamil diaspora but international community. I think Maveerar naal will be much important than an independent day!

If you look at the National interest, it is our duty to take our leader’s message to everybody. Yes, of course TV channels can broadcast a good 45 minutes of speach just only audio. But that is not same as broadcasting the video as well. Even the other aspects of Maveerar naal; showing every thuyilum illams can create much impact.

Well, my point is that I once believed that another TV channel as anti-Tamil media when they did not broadcast our leader’s speach or Maveerar naal event from Tamil Eelam. It is later I realized that they were not given rights to broadcast. Imagine many people believe this and people try to alienate that TV channel. This will create a divide within ourself.

Finally, as a commercial TV channel, your point of view is right. But in National interest, it is best if the Maveerar naal, [independent day] events do not have any exclusive rights. Of course we can have exclusive rights, once Tamil Eelam becomes a stable country.

  5. Dear CAPitalZ,

Yes – it’s true what you write. Our goal is Tamil Eelam, and let’s do what is best for Tamil Eelam.

    Nice blog 🙂

    Kindly regards
    Suriyan

  6. By the way… I have seen on Tamilone WebTV that they telecasted the funeral of Thesaithin Kural Anton Balasingham sir..

Did TVI also telecast the funeral live from London?

What is the opinion of ATN Tamil Channel/Jaya TV regaring Tamil Eelam issues?

    /Suriyan

  7. Dear Suriyan,

Yes, TVi did broadcast the funeral of Theesaththin Kural. I don’t know what other TV channels did as I do not subscribe to them. There is no Jaya TV in Canada. It is, I believe, Tamil TV broadcast the content of Jaya TV.

Anyhow, in my opinion, this event could have had exclusive rights. These are special events, yet is not an imperative nation building issue, as I have mentioned in my earlier reply.

Thanks again, for your visit and comment Suriyan.
