Look at Lanka the way others see it

The Chandrika Kumaratunga government dealt adroitly with foreign nations about violation of human rights here under the able guidance of Lakshman Kadirgamar and that perhaps was the reason why the banning of the LTTE came about in most Western countries. - File Image: Former President Mrs. Kumaratunga

by Jehan Perera

(December 07, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The events that occurred during President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s recent visit to the United Kingdom ought to serve as an early warning to the Sri Lankan government. But the issues that gave rise to the vicious rebellion – and in some ways provided it with the fuel to persist and expand – have basically remained untouched.

Even the former General and Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, Sarath Fonseka (now controversially imprisoned) believed...

The latest WikiLeaks “dump” of around 400,000 US classified war reports on Iraq from 2003 to 2009, the biggest “war leaks” ever in US history, reveals how inhuman and savage the war is, never mind who conducts it and where. Rhyme, Reason, & Realism in Tamil Politics

By Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

"In Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, the Congo, Iran, Nicaragua, and Sri Lanka, the CIA armed and encouraged ethnic minorities to rise up and fight." - John Stockwell, former CIA Station Chief in Angola in 1976(The Secret Wars of the CIA, October 1987)

As far as Tamil politics go, intrinsically and as a sub-set of Sri Lankan politics, the touchstone is not the 18th but the 13th amendment. More: the dominant trend throughout the political history of Tamil nationalism...

Even following the imprisonment of former Army Commander and DNA Leader Sarath Fonseka, the UNP seems unable to cast aside its petty political differences to fight for democracy.

‘Extreme position of appeasement’

“Sri Lanka sits at the crossroads of two significant contemporary geopolitical shifts. Firstly there is the rise and resurgence of China as a regional power; and secondly, many Western governments have lost their credibility in terms of morality, human rights advocacy and international law due to interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan. The SL government is masterful in its diplomacy and deals with a variety of governments, which are sometimes at odds e.g.: Iran & Israel, India & Pakistan, USA &...
