There had been a power outage lasting for more than half an hour yesterday (23rd)  afternoon while President Maithripala Sirisena, who was the chief guest, was addressing the North Western Province Medical Awards Ceremony organized by the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medicine of the North Western Province.

The event, held at the auditorium of the provincial council, had continued in darkness as the standby generator at the auditorium, too, had failed to function. The president was also presented with a commemorative trophy in total darkness. According to sources the Electricity Board, which had not been informed of the event, had imposed the usual power cut applicable to the area.

Meanwhile, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has called for explanations from the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) for announcing a schedule for power cuts without the approval of the PUCSL.

PUCSL Chairman Saliya Mathew in a letter to the CEB states the CEB was required to obtain prior approval from the Commission for scheduled interruptions according to the Transmission and Bulk Supply License….
