VAVUNIYA – 53 former LTTE cadres were married in a mass ceremony attended by MP Namal Rajapaksa and Bollywood star Vivek Oberoi. The couples remain detained by the government in rehabilitation camps but will be given legal documentation and family-style housing. When asked whether they could raise families in this environment, one couple said “release is the best happiness you can give us.”

Asked why people remained detained Namal Rajapaksa – the son of President Mahinda Rajapaksa – said “There’s a long term process of reconciliation and rehabilitation that we are following. When you have anyone that was an enemy combatant there’s a world standard. It’s a long term process. These people are already back on track getting married.”

Vivek Oberoi, returning soon after the IIFA awards, said that he felt ecstatic to participate in such a happy occasion. Following a dance performance by retrained LTTErs, Mr. Oberoi joined them on stage to show them some of his polished Bollywood moves. The former cadres were, themselves, ecstatic.
