Big Issue to give homeless people tap-and-go terminals to prevent falling sales

By Katie Morley - Mon May 30, 5:00 pm

Over the past 15 years as contactless payments have boomed, sales of the Big Issue have fallen sharply.  In 2001, the magazine sold nearly 300,000 copies but between 2007 and 2011 its circulation declined from 167,000 to less than 125,000.

Competition between vendors also increased during this time which is said to have had a negative effect on distribution.

In 2015 cash was used for less than half of all payments by consumers and cash is expected to overtake debit cards and contactless payments by 2021, according to Payments UK, which represents major banks, building societies and payment providers.
