Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour ‘most likely killed’ in drone attack, US defence sources say

“Since the death of Mullah Omar and Mansour’s assumption of leadership, the Taliban have conducted many attacks that have resulted in the death of tens of thousands of Afghan civilians and Afghan security forces as well as numerous U.S. and Coalition personnel.”

While his predecessor, the one-eyed Mullah Mohammed Omar, who died in 2013 was a reclusive hermit, Mansour was – assuming he has been killed – a wealthy businessman.

Mansour was reported to own a house in Dubai, a prosperous western tourist haven, which he visited frequently.

When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, Mansour was the aviation minister. He triumphed in the two years of infighting within the Taliban which followed Omar’s death….
