Millions displaced as Cyclone Roanu slams through Sri Lanka en route to Bangladesh, Myanmar

By Justin Dallaire - Fri May 20, 3:44 pm

The Bay of Bengal’s first cyclone of the monsoon season has ushered in torrential rains and high winds in the region, leaving dozens dead and millions of others without a home.

Cyclone Roanu, which pounded the coast of Sri Lanka earlier this week, continues to move northeastward in the Bay of Bengal. It is expected to reach Bangladesh and Myanmar by Saturday.

Bangladesh is relocating around 2 million people in anticipation of the storm.

So far, Cyclone Roanu has killed 64 Sri Lankans and forced 500,000 others to evacuate their homes. Since last weekend, regions including the capital of Colombo received more than 300 millimetres of rain, making it the heaviest rainfall the country has seen in more than 25 years.
