Sri Lanka is trapped in a colossal debt trap as a result of large scale projects carried out during Mahinda Rajapaksa regime on the pretext of development but became white elephants. Now, the present yahapalana government claiming the move would allow the country to get unshackled from the debt trap is taken a decision to hand over Hambantota harbour and Mattala airport to China. This move is one that endangers the security of the country say political analysts. Harbours and airports are too sensitive projects to be handed over to another country or foreign companies they say adding that they are directly linked with national security.

Handing over assets to settle debt is an accepted process internationally. However, there are no reports of a country handing over a harbour or an airport to settle its debt they point out.
